Non-native speakers of English come from various backgrounds. As their articulation of English sounds to certain extent is influenced by their background, speakers of languages other than English may have problems in hearing and pronouncing some sounds as the sounds are non-existent in their native language. It is interesting to investigate this issue.
The objective of this fieldwork are:
- to be create awareness of errors in articulations among non-native speakers
- to extend one's knowledge on phonology to the community
You are to conduct a fieldwork to identify problems in non-native language learner's articulations of English sounds.
These are the steps:
- Identify a non-native speaker of English (primary, secondary, tertiary level of education)
- Provide his/her with a reading text (Check out sample texts as stated in the link prepared below.)
- Get him/her to read the text aloud
- Record the session
- Analyse the recorded reading based on the articulation of English sounds (consonants, vowels, diphthongs)
- highlight outstanding/repeated errors in articulation produced
- prepare an activity/ activities to correct the errors identified
- e.g. minimal pairs
- tongue twisters
- nursery rhymes/songs
- Conduct the activity with the same non-native speaker
- Reflect the session with him or her. Refer to link below for rubrics on the session reflection.
